The Shack, by Wm. Paul Young

Mackenzie Allen Phillips's youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation. Evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later, in the midst of his great sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note--apparently from God--inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment, he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change his life forever.

Review
"Mac is a grief-stricken father in mid-life about to have an extraordinary experience with God. His great sadness began four years ago on a weekend camping trip, when his 6-year-old daughter, Missy, was murdered. What he couldn't know then, but is about to learn, was God’s purpose for Missy's death. Roger Mueller's clear, gentle voice characterizes Mac's family with high-spirited joy and laughter. His portrayal of Missy's animated excitement makes her especially believable. His polished performance of grief-stricken Mac brings tears. With empathy and sensitivity, Mueller captures the mysterious voices of those who have invited Mac to the now abandoned, yet transformed, cabin in the wilderness. This compelling fantasy explores themes of love, loss, and blame."

Three words...
By michael
I have three words to describe the book. Credulous, fatuous and appalling. I will expand each of these in turn. SPOILER ALERT!! To review this book I will reveal important events in the book. Some readers may wish to skip this review if one plans to read "The Shack". The book opens with an introduction where the author claims to have been told this story first hand by his long time friend, Mack, the protagonist. This is I believe presented as a factual account, not a plot device. This seems credulous as the story which follows is extremely fantastic. For me it has no creditability. The plot of the book is Mack and his family taking a vacation at a lakeside camp ground in Oregon. Mack's six year old daughter, Missy, is abducted and murdered, presumably raped. Three years later Mack finds a note in his mailbox inviting him to return to the shack, the scene of the murder. This note is from "Papa", Mack's wife's moniker for god. Mack decides to accept the invitation. He arrives shack to find it not a decrepit hunting cabin, but a fully livable home. Also although it is deep in a Oregon forest, in the dead of winter, the property, about an acer, is in full, riotous summertime bloom. Mack is greeted at the cabin door by a black woman clearly modeled on clichés of an antebellum black nanny. This woman turns out to be god! (one would think this gender shifting sinful) Jesus is there, a mid-eastern carpenter/handyman, (very creative) and the holy spirit is a ephemeral Asian woman, all nicely PC. The he/she god bustles around the kitchen making pies, whipping up piles of greens and veggies. They tree live together in perfect domestic tranquility and can share a good family laugh when Jesus drops a bowl of pancake batter. All this seems rather fatuous. It is also curious that Papa created this bubble of lush, bountiful bloom, all the food is homegrown, just for Mack but neglects to provide bountiful crops for say, drought ravaged areas of Africa. This seems a shabby use of divine power. After a meal one evening Jesus and Mack set out for a walk, the point of which is to talk about Missy's death privately. Jesus assures Mack he was with Missy the whole time and that Missy prayed for her family and was, "very brave", which he offers to the grieving father as spurious comfort. This is appalling! Here is Jesus, supposedly god incarnate riding along with an abducted child, which knows will be murdered, likely raped, and does nothing to save her! What human man would in such a situation not try to save the child? All Jesus does is ride along. But then he did nothing about the Inquisition, witch craze, sordid church corruption... so what is one child? This is where I have stopped reading. I'm uncertain if I'll toss this book into the closet unfinished or try to endure to the end.

Especially meaningful to those that see God as stern or far-away, but doesn't replace actual disciplined study of the bible
By Bradley Bass
This is an allegory about the nature of God and His relationship to Man, similar in kind to “The Pilgrim’s Progress” by John Bunyan. As with all allegories, it can enlighten truths in a short paragraph that may not be understood in a long chapter of theology. Unfortunately, allegories also have the weakness of being like a “graphic novel” compared to a true novel, simplifying or paraphrasing original material (in this case, the Bible) to the point of distortion.

Things I Liked:
- The depiction of the Trinity as a joyful internal relationship of love, which God desires to share with us.
- The deep love of God for Man (with love manifest differently through each of the Trinity), full of sacrifice and joy, without condemnation.
- A reasonably engaging plot to explore the topics.

Things I Didn’t Like:
- The “romping” good humor of the Trinity for each other and Man was over the top for me. There was no room for “Fear of the Lord” in this story, at all.
- No real iscussion of hell, except to say God wants us all to be with Him.
- Some minor eco-babble, man-bashing, use of the math concept of “fractals”, etc. were annoying.
- Some, mostly minor, points of theology were just wrong in my opinion.

I think this book would be especially meaningful to those that see God as stern or far-away, or for those that carry anger/resentments for wrongs done to them. So, this book can take its place with other recent Christian-pop books like “Wild at Heart” and “A Purpose-Driven Life” that have proven meaningful to some. Just don’t make the mistake that it replaces more disciplined study of the scriptures and serious books of theology that illuminate a greater portion of the Word. If asked to defend your faith, or wondering yourself wht the scriptures say about a topic, you can’t say, “I read something about that in ‘The Shack!’” On the other hand, allegories are the equivalent to parables, and we know Someone that was pretty effective in using those to teach deep concepts through illustrations.

Gut wrenching storyline
By Pam T.
Spoiler alert: A lot of people really love this book. It was well written & the author went into great detail to explain his perception of God. If you believe in an invisible force that contains pure love, does not judge & only wants your love in return, then this book is for you. It seems I am not there yet. I could not get past the death of an innocent child at the hands of a serial killer even though the main character is released from the great sadness of losing his previous child by forgiving her killer. I was depressed for days after reading this story. I understand the concept that forgiveness can release victims from the negative emotional attachment to their agressors. Maybe if I also had the experience of actually meeting God in his three forms in person, I too would come to understand more fully the meaning of unconditional love. In the meantime, I will continue living my life by being as kind as I can be to all I meet. However, if I were to meet anyone abusing a child, I might just feel the need to kick them in their private area, then call the police.

Regenesis: How Synthetic Biology Will Reinvent Nature and Ourselves, by George M. Church, Ed Regis

“Bold and provocative… Regenesis tells of recent advances that may soon yield endless supplies of renewable energy, increased longevity and the return of long-extinct species.”—New Scientist

In Regenesis, Harvard biologist George Church and science writer Ed Regis explore the possibilities—and perils—of the emerging field of synthetic biology. Synthetic biology, in which living organisms are selectively altered by modifying substantial portions of their genomes, allows for the creation of entirely new species of organisms. These technologies—far from the out-of-control nightmare depicted in science fiction—have the power to improve human and animal health, increase our intelligence, enhance our memory, and even extend our life span. A breathtaking look at the potential of this world-changing technology, Regenesis is nothing less than a guide to the future of life.

could have been one chapter
By John
A book outlining the future of sythetic biology and its implications is long overdue, but this book achieves neither. The examples given of synthetic biology are poorly described and tend to jump around (the very interesting chapter titles actually have no bearing on what is written and give the false impression that the book is structured). The authors spent very little time developing a cohesive philosophy about how our culture should approach this novel technology and instead resort to a "gee isn't that cool" kind of approach.

Overall, the book just seemed really fluffy. Many of the points made were repeated over and over without any depth. Instead, the authors fill pages by going into extensive detail about irrelevant matters, such as devoting several pages to describing the building where a convention on synthetic biology was hosted.

As a biology researcher, I can say this is definitely not for anyone with a background in science. Also, lay people looking for examples of synthetic biology should look elsewhere because this book does a poor job explaining things. Finally, those interested in the ethics of these issues will not find any interested arguments here on either side.

A Brief Summary and Review
By A. D. Thibeault
*A full executive summary of this book is available here: An Executive Summary of George M. Church and Ed Regis's 'Regenesis: How Synthetic Biology Will Reinvent Nature and Ourselves'

DNA was only discovered about a century ago, and its structure remained a mystery until about half a century ago, but since this time our knowledge and understanding of DNA has grown immensely (indeed exponentially). What's more, this understanding has evolved to include not just an understanding of how DNA works, but also how it can be manipulated to help advance our ends. The most glaring example here is the phenomenon of genetically modified food. Though not without controversy initially (and some fringe opposition that lives on to this day), it is fair to say that genetically modified food was one of the major scientific advances of the 20th century. Over and above this, our understanding of DNA appeared to reach its most impressive manifestation with the successful sequencing of the human genome in the year 2000.

For the genetics professor and pioneering genetic engineer George Church, however, genetically modified food and the Human Genome Project are but the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the potential of genomics. Indeed, since the year 2005, the exponential growth rate in our ability to read and write DNA has increased from 1.5-fold per year (a rate that matches Moore's law), to the incredible rate of 10-fold per year (p. 243). This explosion in scientific and technological progress has resulted in dramatic advancements in the areas of biochemicals, biomaterials, biofuels and biomedicine. What's more, advancements in these technologies are but in their incipient stage, and the future of genomics promises to dwarf these initial achievements. In his new book 'Regenesis: How Synthetic Biology Will Reinvent Nature and Ourselves' George Church takes us through the developments that have occurred recently in the area of genomics, and also where these developments are likely to take us in the future.

When it comes to the current state of the field, manipulating DNA has already allowed us to produce organisms with new features, such as foodstuffs with novel properties, greater productivity and nutritional value, and resistance to pathogens. Over and above this, micro-species have been programmed to do such things as detect impurities in drinking water, produce electricity from waste-water (and purify the waste-water in the process), produce blood, produce vaccines, take pictures, and even store information. Indeed, the potential to use DNA as a store of information is already recognized to be the likely next leap in computer science, and is poised to initiate a revolution in informatics (just imagine storing all of the information in Wikipedia [in every language] on a chip the size of a blood cell, for a cost of $1 for 100,000 copies [p. 197]).

And, of course, the potential to manipulate genomes does not end with other species: it can also be extended to our own. Actualizing this potential is not far off, and includes such things as increasing intelligence, gaining full immunity to any pathogen (real or hypothetical), and dramatically extending the lifespan (if not removing mortality altogether).

In addition to manipulating genomes for the purpose of creating new biological features, the productive capacity of the genome can also be exploited to produce new substances and materials, such as chemicals, plastics, fuels, drugs, and vaccines. Successes in each of these areas has already been achieved, and the field is on the cusp of scaling-up these processes to an industrial scale. What's more, manipulating genes shows the promise of expanding the current repertoire of the building blocks of substances and materials to produce a whole new array thereof.

Church's book both is both invigorating and inspiring. However, it should be noted that the book is fairly technical throughout, and will only be easily-digested by a reader who already has a fairly deep understanding of the field. Having said that, an educated general reader equipped with a good amount of patience will have no trouble following the argument, and should learn a great deal in the process. Fantastic Book! Fascinating, Fun and Frightening!
By AmazonJavaJunki
I must agree with the above reviewer...this is an absolutely terrific book. Thanks to the superb review (and obvious enthusiasm) I opted to order this book on the spur of the moment while listening to a short interview with the author. Couldn't be more pleased. This book is absolutely fantastic. It's fun, it's downright frightening in some ways but it is fabulous across the board.

The author does a terrific job of making this somewhat complex topic accessible to the average reader. There are areas where I find myself wanting more information and a few areas of a bit less interest but overall, it presents a dramatic future view of the potential of synthetic biology including the promise and peril. Will it look exactly like this in the future...probably not but this gives great insight into the direction and trends rather than the specifics. Readers are likely to find at least a few things that are downright thrilling as well as some that are chilling to even contemplate. Clearly the legal limits haven't kept up with the emerging technology...an area that will need a lot of attention at some point in the future. Delightful book!

Review

"The key strength of Logic as a whole is Baronett's style and ability to speak to students. The explanations are clear, on point, and easy to grasp. The examples connect with our intuitive ability to reason and ease students into the rigors of formal logic, without sacrificing any clarity or precision. This text puts logic within the reach of every student, and faculty will find it to be comprehensive and well organized. It is clearly superior to other texts on the market."--Nancy Slonneger-Hancock, Northern Kentucky University

"Baronett's book is superior in its class as a logic textbook. It's filled with wonderful and pertinent exercise problems with answers easily accessed, which are always accompanied by clever and comprehensible explanations. And Baronett's supplemental products are far and away the best I have seen in the field."--Lorraine Arangno, University of Colorado Colorado Springs

"Logic contains a wealth of information, examples, and exercises from all walks of life, is flexible enough to support differing course needs, and has the comprehensiveness necessary for teachers and the relevance and excitement necessary to sustain students' interest. I find it far superior to Hurley in terms of its content, organization, and clarity of writing."--Joia Lewis Turner, Saint Paul College

"The examples and sample problems are wonderful! They draw from sources that students may find familiar, such as popular culture, advertising, medicine, literature, politics, and even famous arguments in the history of philosophy."--Kevin DeLapp, Converse College

"The substantive explanations are very, very clear indeed, and are better in my view than those in Hurley. Logic covers all that I use in Hurley, is more accessible, has a better online package, and is cheaper. An exceptionally clear and accessible text that's perfect for an introductory logic course."--James Stacey Taylor, The College of New Jersey

"Logic, Third Edition, is the best self-study guide to logic that I have come across. It features plain, practical expository language; plenty of clarifying examples; and lots of interesting exercises crafted to satisfy students through a range of skill levels. The book is airy by comparison to other texts, light and transparent. With all of the ancillary items, instructor resources, and support available from OUP, you should really take a look at it."--Ian MacKinnon, University of Akron

"This edition of Logic is probably the best logic book that I have seen in the last twenty years. The explanations, examples, and exercises are very good, much better than the usual discussions. The book is very student-friendly and very sensible and has excellent coverage of the basic concepts and tons of exercises, nicely graduated. I like that many of the exercises are taken from works of literature and from newspapers; this helps to underscore the applicability of logic to, well, just about everything. Chapter 5 has the great virtue of allowing one to follow either the Aristotelian or the modern interpretations of categorical logic. Usually, in fact almost standardly, these are mushed together into a hideous thing."--Nathaniel Nicol, Washington State University

"I am drawn by Logic's tone--clear and down to earth, and very accessible. I also like its balance of sources: literature, current events, the law, etc. The cost is a huge advantage that this text has over all of its major competition."--Reginald Williams, Bakersfield College

"It covers much of the same material as Hurley's and Copi's texts but, unlike those texts, Baronett's text appears to be written more with the student in mind. I would place it above both Copi's and Hurley's texts because of the cost, accessibility, variety of material, and its presentation."--Alexander Miller, Piedmont Technical College

"In Chapter 9, Baronett presents predicate logic in the most accessible and non-intimidating manner of all the course texts that I have used. The examples really do illustrate what the author is intending to convey in a clear and non-confusing way. And the exercises do a splendid job in bolstering the covered material."--Joseph Okello, Asbury Theological Seminary

"In Logic, Stan Baronett does what many logic texts fail to do. Namely, he clearly explains both inductive and deductive logical concepts in language that students can appreciate, and does so with candor and humor."--Basil Smith, Saddleback College

Autobiography of a Spiritually Incorrect Mystic, by Osho

An indispensable work for understanding the life and teachings of one of the most unusual mystics and philosophers of our time.

Ten years have past since, in the words of his attending physician, Osho prepared for his departure from the body that had served him for fifty-nine years "as calmly as though he were packing for a weekend in the country." This volume is recognition that the time has come to provide a historical and biographical context for understanding Osho and his work. Who was this man, known as the Sex Guru, the "self-appointed bhagwan" (Rajneesh), the Rolls-Royce Guru, the Rich Man's Guru, and simply the Master?

Drawn from nearly five thousand hours of Osho's recorded talks, this is the story of his youth and education, his life as a professor of philosophy and years of travel teaching the importance of meditation, and the true legacy he sought to leave behind: a religionless religion centered on individual awareness and responsibility and the teaching of "Zorba the Buddha," a celebration of the whole human being.

Amazon.com Review
Osho, better known as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, became infamous for his posh lifestyle and outrageous teachings. A prolific author of some respectable and even insightful books, he refused to pen an autobiography for his myriad disciples. Nonetheless, two of these, Sarito Carol Neiman and Ma Yoga Bhakti, have pieced together an autobiography of sorts from the many of volumes of his writings and published talks. We find in Osho a vibrant mind, a sharp wit, and a feigned unpretentiousness that is both disarming and seductive. Following his story, we learn Osho was raised on a loose tether by his businessman grandfather and atheist grandmother, rebelliously questioning religious authority by the age of 5. By the age of 7, he was uncontrollable, and at 21, he had a prolonged enlightenment experience. A Ph.D. in philosophy brought him to the role of professor, but he outgrew it with his talks on meditation that gradually became more radical, until he was known in India as the sex guru. Ousted from India, he sought to create the perfect and most free community, choosing a remote corner of the U.S. Controversy erupted, and the man who called himself Zorba the Buddha became persona non grata the world over. To read about this unorthodox teacher in his own words is certainly entertaining, and although not without internal contradictions, the book is valuable for its relentless challenge to the sacred tenets of established religious thought. Like the best Zen master, Osho forces us to reconsider our conventions. --Brian Bruya

From Publishers Weekly
"Autobiography" is a misnomer, as the Indian mystic Osho (1931-1990) never wrote his memoirs; this book is an arrangement of reminiscences harvested from thousands of tape-recorded talks. However, the titular phrase "spiritually incorrect" is apt for a man who called himself "Zorba the Buddha." Born Rajneesh Chandra Mohan, Osho became a philosophy professor and began attracting followers in the 1960s. In 1968, he shocked Indian society by publishing a series of talks under the title From Sex to Superconsciousness. In the 1980s, he came to America and founded a commune in Oregon, called Rajneeshpuram. He was deported a few years later following the discovery that his personal assistant had firebombed a county planning office, among other crimes. In 1988, he said that the Buddha had "taken shelter" in him for four days, but departed because of disapproval of Osho's luxurious lifestyle, which included ownership of 90 Rolls-Royces. Osho's thought (or no-thought) clearly arises from India's Buddhist tradition, but his discourses refer to sources as diverse as Muhammad and Jung. Mixing Western therapy and Eastern meditation, Osho introduced such innovative practices as "dynamic meditation," which involved dancing, leaping and shouting instead of sitting in silence. Readers may be amused by Osho's humor, taken aback by his boastfulness, bemused by his pronouncements and shocked by his irreverence, but occasionally they will also be struck by his insight. (May)

From Booklist
Osho's posthumous autobiography affords a delightful glimpse into the life of one of the most outrageous twentieth-century spiritual leaders. Consisting of anecdotes that Osho told during his many lectures and classes, the book has a conversational tone that well conveys the sometimes infamous guru's dynamic personality as it offers a sampling of his thoughts on meditation, enlightenment, sex, money, education, and the evolution of consciousness. Osho was not afraid to tackle the world's major religions, pointing out inconsistencies and hypocrisy where he found them and simultaneously drawing together their best aspects into a synthesis grounded in meditation. Osho also answers some of the criticisms leveled at him for his seemingly outrageous behavior and his iconoclastic tendencies. He proves a fascinating man: a prolific writer and lecturer, highly educated, and deeply passionate about his own search for truth. Whether or not one is interested in Osho's teachings or in the controversies surrounding his movement, his autobiography is entertaining, insightful, and for some, perhaps, even enlightening. A glimpse into the life of a great teacher
By Stan Gibilisco
I have read several of Osho's works. As a mathematician, I find his logic entertaining if not always rigorous. His outlook on the world, and on life, is uplifting.

I discovered Osho when I was "escaping" to Kona, Hawaii, fearing a utility grid collapse on the mainland over the Y2K transition. (Was it Mark Twain who said that life consists of a series of catastrophes, 95 percent of which never happen?) There was a wonderful little book store in Kona called "Middle Earth." I bought their Osho stock out!

Reading Osho's work is like listening to a symphony. Of course, some symphonies are better than others; his books *Joy* and *Courage* are among the best in my opinion. But it's hard to take Osho too seriously, especially when he writes with apparent fondness about the severing of limbs and heads. At that point, the music gets dissonant, and I can only laugh.

I bought *Spiritually Incorrect Mystic* because I was curious about Osho's life. As I read the book, I was not disappointed. I wish I'd had a childhood like his. But in the American Midwest during the 1960s, that was not to be. Failing that, I'm trying to make my adulthood as much like his childhood as I possibly can. I recommend this book, and all of Osho's books. Just don't get too serious about them.

GREAT READ!
By Gauri-Pahari Das
I was unaware of all the controversy about this man, and I wish I still was naiive to it. I love osho's books they have helped me so much ...as a younger person, I didnt know about all the bad stuff, or Rajneeshpuram. This book doesnt go too far into THAT, which is good because his teachings were and still are so strong. Some say that this book left out a bunch of stuff ... maybe for good reason. Osho is to YOU what you want him to be. You dont have to wear marroon or orange clothing and go to retreats to experience Osho. Hes right here! OSHO-NEVER BORN NEVER DIED-ONLY VISITED THIS EARTH FROM 1931-1990. And I believe that Sheela poisoned him, she was the one to go to prison for her wrongdoings not Osho.. But maybe it was the government like he thought when he was in jail for 12 days and deported for no real reason. Regardless, he died at age 59. Left his body. Perhaps it was his time to leave that body and come back later on. I love tis book. I have disregarded all the bad stuff Ive read abou him, and focus only what he taught me (and continues to teach me) through his books and words. I wish I could have met him. Namaste.

Osho's words are a meditation in itself!
By Bernd Phoenix
Already in the preface one can find these amazing words: "Ordinary history takes care about the facts - what actually happens in the world of matter, the incidents. It does not take care about the truth because truth does not happen in the world of matter, it happens in the world of consciousness." His words are just straight to the point of truth, they ring with it and leave a meditative silence behind. I loved the section about his childhood in that beautifull Indian Village and the quietness it created in him. We can all use a little of that.

Solid thermo book w/ some application
By Layton Baker
This book is well written and explains thermo science in detail. Not only does this book teach the theory; it teaches how to apply the theory in the design of real chemical systems. This book is tough sleding...although not as tough as Sandler's book on thermo, which is also, in my opinion, and better book. I
My only real dislike of this book is the formating...I read this book for long hours at a time in my thermo class (it was one of three books required for the course) and I must say the text and page layout of the book really bothered me.
