Misled on the Yellow Brick Road

I found that Morena has misled her readers into thinking that this is a book about OZ; especially since she is a relative of the creator. But it really talks about her interest in play/sandbox therapy. I am not interested in that so I felt disappointed with the book.

Brilliantly insightful interpretation of the classic Oz tale

This book came to me at a crossroads in my own life, at a time when I was experiencing my own personal journey to find the metaphorical `home', which paralleled Dorothy's journey in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. I was so moved by Gita Morena's brilliantly insightful interpretation of the Oz story that I contacted her, and traveled across the country twice to attend meditation retreats that she led. The wisdom she brings to the interpretation of the Oz story is profound, inspirational and life-enhancing.

As great-granddaughter of Oz author L. Frank Baum, Dr. Morena brings a unique perspective to the interpretation of the Oz story in her masterfully written book. She begins by sharing her family history and setting the stage by showing how Baum's tale addressed numerous social, cultural and political issues in late 19th century America, when it was written. Dr. Morena is also a PhD Jungian psychologist who embraces Eastern philosophy, and it is this perspective that enables her to bring clarity to the true meaning of Dorothy's journey.

At some point in most every life, the proverbial `cyclone' hits out of the blue in the form of a major and unexpected upheaval. For those who allow their path to unfold, this `cyclone' represents the beginning of a sacred journey towards our true `home', which, as Dorothy learned, is the undiscovered or untapped resources we all possess, and the very "essence of who we are". Each character in Oz actually symbolizes an aspect of ourselves that must be acknowledged, developed and integrated into the whole. The Scarecrow represents wisdom, the Tin Woodman represents compassion, the Cowardly Lion represents courage, and Toto represents the intuitive or instinctual energy we each possess. Even the Wicked Witch represents the "shadow" or dark and repressed side of ourselves that we may not want to face, but must be addressed in order to find `home'. Dorothy's journey has several distinct phases and contains many challenges, paralleling our human journey along our own yellow brick road in life. We must also learn as Dorothy did that there really are no magical "Wizards" who can rescue us and send us home - we must do this for ourselves. In her book, Dr. Morena also shares her own very personal journey, which parallels Dorothy's. It is through facing the challenges in life's journey that we develop our own wisdom, compassion, courage and intuition, and find our own way `home'. As Dorothy realizes at the end of the story, she already has everything she needs inside of her.

The Oz characters and the journey along the yellow brick road touch a deep chord in many readers, and have become powerful metaphorical symbols in our culture. Dr. Morena illustrates this point using examples from the "sandplay" portion of her psychotherapy practice. Clients are guided to create scenes in a type of sandbox, choosing several of thousands of small figures available. As with art, music or poetry, these scenes help express important aspects of the inner self and the personal journey that a person may not be able to express in words. Time after time Dr. Morena's clients are drawn to use Oz characters or to create a yellow brick road in the sand, thus demonstrating how these characters do represent aspects of ourselves that must be acknowledged, developed, and/or integrated into the self. It is quite fascinating.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a deeper look at this classic tale, and how its symbolic imagery can illuminate aspects of every human journey.

Most recently employed at the circus as the pig shot out of a cannon, she assumes the title Nanny when she spies a Help Wanted sign on the lawn of the Green family. Mrs. Green is dead, and Mr. Green is so tightfisted he refuses to pay a human nanny. So when a pig applies . . . . But as the three Green children soon realize, Nanny Piggins is a jewel. Extraordinarily clever, she knows when to morph that quality into deviousness, which certainly becomes necessary when dealing with the dull, pompous Mr. Green. The children—Derrick, Samantha, and Michael—promptly fall in love with Nanny Piggins because she lets them eat sweets all day and comes up with the most marvelous ideas, like taking a boat to China to get Chinese takeout. Even when things don’t exactly work out as planned (and they rarely do), the high jinks and hilarity make them excellent adventures. Stuffing adjectives into this review is as easy as watching Nanny Piggins stuff pies into her mouth. Lots of fun for kids and parents!

This book is laugh-out-loud fun for parents and kids. If you're looking for a book that will keep kids entertained and wanting to read, then this is it. From an adult point of view, there is plenty of amusement and lots of wry smirks. Dieters beware: there are lots of references to chocolate, cakes and other yummy things! It's certainly one that we'll share with relatives and friends.

Five characters appear in the Yonsei Korean in 3 Weeks 1 and the 12 lessons consist of dialogues about the everyday life of these characters. Each chapter of this textbook includes a chapter title, objective, illustration and introductory questions, dialogue, pronunciation, vocabulary words, grammar, tasks and culture. The chapter title for each lesson is an important sentence taken from the chapter dialogue. The objective for each chapter presents a communication skill and task necessary to learn in order to motivate the learner and help promote a clearer understanding of the chapter. The main dialogue of each chapter was created with the intention to make it the most typical and representative type of dialogue concerning a targeted theme. Each dialogue is made up of 4-7 sentences with 2 turns of dialogue. An illustration and a couple of questions come before the dialogue to help the learner become interested in the content of the conversation. Words from the dialogue that need special attention with pronunciation are presented separately to help the learner practice the words with accurate pronunciation. The main chapter dialogues are presented in English, Japanese, and Chinese in a supplement to help the learner easily understand the context and content of the dialogue. The selected vocabulary words for the theme of each chapter that the learner must know are presented with illustrations to help with understanding meaning. There are 321 words presented in Yonsei Korean in 3 Weeks 1. The grammar and sentence pattern lessons that come from each chapter s main dialogue are explained in the learner s native language in a supplement and the example sentences are presented. After the grammar presentation, practice questions are included to help the learner check what he or she has learned. There are 3 tasks for each chapter which are consistent with the communication skill presented in the chapter objective. The tasks adequately address the four skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing, and for the beginner stage, a greater emphasis is made on speaking and listening. The culture section that pertains to the theme of the chapter and helps in understanding the Korean language includes an explanation and photograph or drawing. As a supplement, translation, grammar practice, listening script, sample answers and index are provided for the learner s confirmation of the chapter s contents and selfstudy of the targeted grammar lessons. The sample answers present the answers to the vocabulary and grammar practice. In the index of vocabulary and grammar, the new vocabulary, including the vocabulary related to themes, and grammar lessons are organized in Korean alphabetical order.

About the Author
One of England s most beloved authors, Jane Austen wrote such classic novels as Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, and Northanger Abbey. Published anonymously during her life, Austen s work was renowned for its realism, humour, and commentary on English social rites and society at the time. Austen s writing was supported by her family, particularly by her brother, Henry, and sister, Cassandra, who is believed to have destroyed, at Austen s request, her personal correspondence after Austen s death in 1817. Austen s authorship was revealed by her nephew in A Memoir of Jane Austen, published in 1869, and the literary value of her work has since been recognized by scholars around the world.

A 'nice' collection of early Austen and a few out-takes

This book brings together Austen's earliest novel, Northanger Abbey (although it was not published for many years after completion), with some of her earlier works and her final, unfinished, piece Sanditon.
This edition also has a fine introduction, which gives an interesting view of Austen's works and fleshes out some of the details surrounding the three lesser known works.
Northanger Abbey is, of course, the best known of these works, and a review follows below. Of the other three pieces, Lady Susan is the only completed one.
It follows the epistolary format that Austen experimented with extensively in her early career, but ultimately abandons the format, a little disappointingly.
It is an engaging piece, and the Lady Susan of the title is a vivacious, although reprehensible, character. Lady Susan has by far the strongest voice of the piece, but it is unclear whether she is truly intended as the heroine, or whether our sympathies should lie with her hapless daughter Frederica. Lady Susan is certainly a much more determined flirt than any of Austen's other major characters, and much older too (although perhaps not wiser).
The Watsons is a much shorter fragment, also dating from Austen's earlier career. It is darker in tone than her other works, and seems to tend more towards realism. It seems that this may be one of the reasons she chose not to finish the piece, although it seems that she ultimately intended for the piece to have a happy ending.
Sanditon is Austen's final work, begun shortly before her death and, sadly, never finished. The piece appears to have had a great deal of scope, describing the life and a times of the seaside resort of Sanditon. The tone and outlook of the piece are surprisingly upbeat, given the poor state of Austen's health as she was writing.
I hear that authors never like people to pick their early works as their best, but I've always had a sneaking fondness for Northanger Abbey. Luckily, Jane Austen is unlikely to complain about me liking one of her earliest works.
The novel's appeal is its extremely likeable anti-heroine, Catherine Morland. Catherine's appeal is her innocence and above all her fallibility. Of course, none of Austen's heroines are perfect, but Catherine has a charm that Austen's more self-possessed characters like Emma Woodhouse and Lizzie Bennett lack.
For this reason, I would say that Northanger Abbey can be a good introduction to Jane Austen, especially for younger readers, who may identify more readily with Catherine's naivete than with some of Austen's more mature characters.
As ever, Austen is in fine satirical form, but she and her characters stop short of outright mocking the fanciful Catherine and her unfortunate novel-reading habits. As one might expect, the novel ends with Catherine's reform, redemption would perhaps be too strong a term to use here, and Austen allows the imperfect Catherine to shine among a sea of other imperfect characters. (Naturally, some are more imperfect than others.)
One of the novel's stated objects is to satirise the gothic novels of Mrs. Radcliffe and her imitators. For the most part, Austen succeeds admirably, but once again her treatment of the subject is rather gentle. Although not many people these days will read the original gothic novels, I'm sure there are plenty of people out there addicted to contemporary fantastical horror that would crack a wry smile at the story, and be able to identify with 'poor' Catherine.
Perhaps at times the characters do seem to be a little overstated, maybe a little too black and white, but this is a very creditable early effort from Austen, and perhaps some of her characterisation issues can be traced back to her use of the gothic novel as inspiration.
All in all, a fine book, and certainly one for all of those 'almost pretty' girls out there who have their heads stuck inside books at every opportunity.

Overall, this edition makes a good addition to any Austen fan's bookshelf, the inclusion of the lesser known pieces makes an interesting companion to Northanger Abbey.

If you like Jane Austin you'll like this funny story....

This book is written by letters to and from the various characters. It's classic Jane Austen. You have to kind of know Jane Austen stuff to "get" some of this. My husband saw the current movie based on this book with Kate Beckinsale "Love and Friendship" and he was lost at first. Then, after awhile he got into it and "got" the humor. But, I was laughing from the start. It's a very fun read if you like J.A.

"Is it weird? I never laugh"

The dialogue in Intense is brief, but the words can pack such an emotional wallop. In just that sentence, we can get a glimpse into the kind of miserable life Jiwoon goes through as the Boss' slave. Because that's what Jiwoon is, a slave that quietly follows and mindlessly obeys whatever that piece of s**t Boss demands. As Soohan and Jiwoon's relationship deepens and becomes physical, we find out that the rumors are true. The young, strange, beautiful boy is regularly sexually abused by the Boss. He has been so emotionally and physically stomped on, he has a hard time even understanding that what the Boss does to him isn't normal, and with tenderness, Soohan manages to open him up to an actual loving relationship. But not everything is going well, the madam has caught up to their secret trysts, and worse, the Boss is out of jail and calls Jiwoon back. What will happen to these sad, beautiful boys and their seemingly doomed love? I want to find out, but at the same time, I'm afraid to find out. What a wonderful piece of storytelling.

I was honestly surprised this series didn't go as dark as it seemed like it might

The plot and character development might take awhile to get going, but the two main characters are endearing enough to get you through it all. I was honestly surprised this series didn't go as dark as it seemed like it might. Happy it didn't, though, since it wasn't necessary. The boys' pasts appear dark enough as it is. The art is beautiful, in some parts breath taking. The love scenes were, in a word, INTENSE.
