This title is valuable and should be reprinted.

For those fascinated with religion in general and Islam in particular, Cyril Glasse's book is a treasure. I purchased my copy in 1991. I would pour over the work for hours, letting one entry guide me to others, often forgetting what I had originally sought to investigate. It is, indeed, a popular, one-volume dictionary written in an accessible prose style. The entries are brief and to the point, providing enough information to answer an immediate question about the religion, but also enough to encite further investigation of the topic in a larger work. The print is easy to read. All topics related to Islam are covered, including not only Sunni and Shiite Islam, but also the various sects that have evolved from Islam, such as the Bahais and the Druze. Theology, mysticism, folk belief, law, history, art as each pertains to Islam are fully covered. In many entries, Glasse compares Islamic belief and worship with those of Judaism and Christianity. Glasse's work covers all geographic areas of Islam, too, not just the Arabian heartland. The Encyclopedia lists entries according to Arabic tranliteration, but also lists reference entries in anglisized spellings. Some beautiful photographs illustrate the work and the appendix contains a graphic timeline of the development of Islam. I can not say enough about the value of the Concise Encyclopedia of Islam; I've learned more from it than from most narrative accounts of Islam. When, a year or so ago, I lost my copy during a move, I was deeply saddened to find that HarperCollins has chosen not to reprint the title. I understand the title is not technically out of print, but it is nonetheless unavailable. This review, then, is a plea for HarperCollins to reissue the Encyclopedia in the near future. The energy and committment that Glasse must have given to his research and its worthy results should not remain unavailable.

Best general reference on Islam in our library

I was not aware that the book was out of print. It is a very unfortunate situation for those seeking a general reference on Islam. None of the 27 English-language texts we have on the subject even approach the breadth and presentation of this encyclopedia. I should hope that it will either be reprinted or released in a new edition. I do not easily give 10s in my reviews but this book certainly deserves it.

Don't Be Daft... 'Aven't You Heard Of Parrots?

For reference, I came across this story in the summer of 2005 when Christopher Eccleston read it for the BBC's "CBeebies Bedtime Hour" (for us non-Brits: celebrities reading bedtime stories on the tele for the little tykes). As of writing this, I'm 21, and still enjoyed this delightful little tale.

Like the description states, it's the story about two monkeys that are awake during different times of the day and what happens when they come together and share their different worlds - worlds that are only seperated by day and night. For instance, Day Monkey asks why there's a big banana in the sky and Night Monkey tells him it's the moon. It's like that all through the story; black monkeys versus shadows, blinking eyes in the dark versus fireflies, and the answer always begins with the line "Don't be daft..." which is so completely and utterly British, I love it to pieces. :)

I'm single, and even though all my nieces and nephews are too old for this one, I still bought the book on the off chance I would have a child to share it with. But then you're talking to a big kid at heart who still watches Rollie Pollie Ollie, so what do I know. ;)

Cheeky Monkeys

I love this book. My daughter has a plush monkey that she cuddles up with when we read this delightful book. The illustrations are bright and beautiful. The text is sweet and lyrical. Unlike most children's books, I don't get the slightest bit tired of reading it over and over and over again.

I deducted one star from my review for the idiot of a graphic designer who put black type on a dark blue background. Luckily, after the 15th or so reading, I had it pretty much memorized, but still. Making your readers squint to try to work out what the book says is pretty weak, particularly with high gloss pages on a book made to be read in the low light of a baby's bedroom.

FYI, not a Tell-All but a wonderful book!

If you are in any way a fan of Ian Thorpe or swimming I would recommend this book. If you are looking for a juicy salacious tell-all, this is not it. Also, you cannot really read this without knowing anything about swimming or his career, but then I doubt you would be interested. However, if you are, just read his wiki page and that should be sufficient.

The book is organized in a diary format in the year leading up to the Olympics. Each entry starts in the present-day struggle to earn a spot on the Aussie Olympic team, and then it reverts back to past memories or his personal ideas or beliefs on issues. The flashbacks are not in chronological order which I suppose is true to how a person looks back on past events, but it can be a little confusing at times. It's easier to read if you take each chapter at a time and don't try to organize it in your head like I did. The transitions from the present day to past events made me keenly aware that this was written by two writers. I imagine Ian kept a diary, and then very separately wrote about past events and the professional writer put it all together and published it in three months. So, like so many books now, it was rushed, and while clearly very edited, there are some grammatical errors and a lack of fluidity. This is why it lost a star for me. Either keep it real and rough, the way a diary is written, or make it perfectly professional. This was very much in between the two.

I will say the honesty throughout is really refreshing. You get a very good sense of what it must have been like to be a a champion at such a young age and the pressures he has lived with all these years and again with his comeback. He clearly is a very sensitive and private person and, as a long-time fan, this is his most revealing project. This might be the first time we get a real sense of who he his. The problem, of course, is he still is that private person. Unlike many other athletes's memoirs, some private issues are addressed but still glazed over or kept vague. I am not really holding the book against it, but it's important to know if you read a lot of autobiographies. I would not call it a tell-all. The exception I would say is the now famous excerpt on depression. This was very raw and honest and deserves the attention it is receiving.

~The following is truly personal opinion that did not factor into my review.

He's gets annoyed but not angry, happy but not overjoyed. The anxiety seems to be the strongest emotion he feels in his comeback, and overall I was left with a feeling of sadness, which I can't completely explain. It is extremely rare that a very shy, sensitive person would become a famous athlete. This I think it what made him and continues to make him so interesting. However, those personality traits are disastrous combined with massive media attention and scrutiny. You receive a huge sense of this in the book. We are told he found the joy in swimming again, but there is not a lot of joy in this book. There is clearly still a Part II to his life which he hasn't even begun, and I hope he finds more happiness there.

I was very moved by Ian's totally honest and up front description of his life. A man with great depth and an ambition to help others less fortunate. You don't have to agree with everything but I admire his commitment to the things he believes in.

Ian Thorpe is a champion. This comment is not restricted to just his swimming. He is a champion because he cares about being a human being. He cares about good old fashioned values. Therefore he represents to me what Australia is all about. Opportunites that can be taken to acheive something great. Great read.

Having survived the brutal cold of Washington's winter, the Hawaiian delegation welcomed spring. Having survived yet another campaign to annex their homeland to America, they took a brief moment to remark cheerfully on the survival of Hawai'i as an independent nation. Perhaps the moment for America to take over Hawai'i had come and gone, and perhaps the Hawaiians could now get their country back.

The queen of Hawai'i had been living in a hotel in Washington during most of 1897, and the delegates of the native political societies had arrived toward the end of the year, in the dead of winter, to support her with the most ambitious of their many petitions. The delegation had come from mass rallies in Hawai'i against annexation that had been attended by thousands of Hawaiians, who now were nearly one quarter of the earth's surface away. At one of the rallies against annexation, a speaker had likened the Kingdom of Hawai'i to a house, which had been built by the great king, Kamehameha. A handful of foreigners had taken over the house, and they had given the Hawaiians a lei stand in return, where the Hawaiians were expected to reside and sell flowers.

Would the Hawaiians live in the lei stand? "Agole," the crowd had shouted back. No, never.

When the delegates to Washington closed their eyes they could remember the faces, the families, and the petitions passing from hand to hand for people to sign their names. As a result of the petition drive, the Hawaiian delegation had arrived in Washington with thirty-eight thousand signatures protesting America's proposed annexation of their country, and they were eager to call the petitions to the attention of influential Americans. Considering that only forty thousand or so Hawaiians survived, it was surely true, as their opponents said, that some of the signatures were duplicates, and some were the names of children, and perhaps some were names of the dead. But the petitions nonetheless were a virtual census of the Hawaiian nation, as Hawaiians still called themselves, and the petitions said eloquently that in spite of everything that had happened, they wanted to be what they had been, a nation in the world system of nations.

This book is a revelation! I thought I knew quite a bit about the annexation of Hawaii into the United States, but Tom Coffman has gone back to original sources and come up with a new and compelling account. This book shows how the annexation of Hawaii was engineered by American planters and how mainland public opinion was manipulated into accepting the takeover. It also places the annexation in context of the imperialism and colonalism that was sweeping the world in the late 19th century. Finally, it shows the resistance of the Hawaiian people to being submerged in the American nation and gives us an idea of what is behind the sovereignty movement in Hawaii today. This book is not an easy read -- it's packed with detail and unfamiliar names and places. But if you want to look beyond "beautiful Hawaii" and read some little known US and world history, you will find this book fascinating.

Excellent book revealing context and process of annexation

The annexation of Hawai`i by the U.S., as well as the preceeding overthrow of Hawai`i by U.S. military forces and the installation of a republic, is not widely understood. In fact, most sources either gloss over the overthrow and annexation or else present a grossly misleading presentation which has worked its way from the writings of those who originally orchestrated the events into the average history book.
Tom Coffman goes through much effort to review not only the body of secondary sources, but also a very large body of primary sources available from the records of the Republic, the various Hawaiian civic bodies, the original newspapers (including the Hawaiian language newspapers), the letters of American businessmen and politicians, and other sources. The synthesis he builds reveals a very insightful and different story of how and why Hawai`i went from an internationally-recognized autonomous nation to a property of the U.S. In contrast to the claims of many sources, the overthrow and annexation were against the wishes of the vast majority of Hawaiians, whose opinions are recorded in petitions stored at the U.S. National Archives as well as in the newspapers and Hawaiian-language writings of the time.
Coffman goes well beyond merely correcting many of the common misconceptions about the stability of the monarchy and the opinions of the people of Hawai`i. He presents insights into the thinking and motivations of all involved parties, from various segments of the population of Hawai`i to businessmen and politicians in the U.S., and explains how Americans in Hawai`i and the U.S. worked together on the common goal of overthrowing and annexing Hawai`i.
This is an important text for anybody trying to understand the history or current events of Hawai`i. It is also of interest to anybody who is interested in American politics at the turn of the century, as Manifest Destiny changed its goal from expanding to fill the continental U.S. into the U.S. exerting itself as an imperial global superpower.

Women, surgery, love, and mystery, Scottish style.

Thanks to NetGalley and to Grove Atlantic for providing me with an ARC copy of this novel that I freely chose to review.
I have read several books written by Christopher Brookmyre years back and I loved them. I discovered him by picking up The Secret Art of Stealing at Liverpool Airport on the strength of reading the description and a few lines. The book had me laughing out loud within a few pages, and since then I’ve read a few of his novels, although I haven’t followed any of his series in full. I couldn’t resist the chance to catch up with his newest book, although I hadn’t read any of the other novels in the Parlabane series. And he delivered once more.
I loved this book. There were the funny and witty moments the author had me accustomed to (although it is, by no means, his funniest book), the complex and tri-dimensional characters, the Scottish background, the complex plot with twist and turns that keep you guessing. I particularly liked the different points-of-view used to tell the story. Two of the points of views (although one only very briefly) are narrated in the first person, and the rest, including Parbalane’s and the female detective’s, are in the third person. I am fascinated by narrators and their roles in novels, and the way Brookmyre uses the different voices and points-of-view in this novel is a beautiful illustration of how the different options can be put to the best of uses. We get to see the same facts and events from different points of views, some directly involved in them, some who are investigating or being told the same, some at the time and some recounting what happened some time ago. Brookmyre puts the brains of his readers to the test, making them try to create a single consistent story from the different versions of events and different timelines, a bit like trying to complete the picture in a jigsaw puzzle from the disparate pieces. The story is cleverly composed sharing clues that wrong-foot us often, and we keep changing our minds as to our sympathies, suspects, and who the goodies and the baddies are. I can honestly say I kept trying to work out if I was being taken for a ride by the narrators or if I was just being given very partial accounts of the events.
It’s difficult to talk in detail about this novel without giving any spoilers away. Being a doctor, and a woman, I felt particularly drawn to one the characters, the female surgeon who tells her version of the story in the first person, Diana Jager. She is by no means perfect and due to her determined actions has come to be feared and disliked, but I empathised with her experiences and her feelings about the career and the inherent difficulties women have to face (I remember as a medical student training in a hospital where one of the surgery firms would not take on female trainees, the only female surgeon with a regular post was known to be the lover of one of the surgeons and never did a day’s surgery in several months I was there, and among women the accepted wisdom was that women had to work twice as hard as men to get less than half the way up the ladder than they did. I hope things have changed since but I’m not confident). But the rest of the characters are equally interesting and non-standard. Although as I mentioned I haven’t read any of the previous Parlabane’s mysteries, I didn’t find that was an impediment to my enjoyment of the book, although I’m sure those who follow the series might enjoy it even more (if that’s possible).
The story is dynamically told, and if anything, I thought it accelerates towards the end (as is usually the case when we see the resolution coming). I can’t say I saw what was going to happen from the beginning, although I sometimes beat Parlabane to the post, but just by little. I enjoyed the cleverness of the story and the way was written too. A case of form perfectly matching content.
An involved and intriguing story, beautifully told, full of local detail and complex characters, that reflects on serious themes and will keep you guessing until the end, recommended to lovers of mysteries and thrillers. Another great book by Brookmyre.
