About the Author

Richard Robbins received his Ph.D. in anthropology from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has spent his entire teaching career at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh.  Some of his most formative academic experiences include field research among Cree, Inuit and Naskapi First Nations peoples of Canada, Acadian farmers and fisherfolk in New Brunswick, Canada, and among religious communal societies in the United States.  A research semester at the Science Studies Unit at the University of Edinburgh would count as one of his most stimulating intellectual experiences. 

 

He has received the State University of New York’s Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and the American Anthropological Association/McGraw-Hill Teacher of the Year Award.  He appeared also in the hit anti-globalization documentary, The Yes Men.  He is currently SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor at Plattsburgh, and maintains a global problems website at www.plattsburgh.edu/legacy and a general website at faculty.plattsburgh.edu/richard.robbins.  He can be contacted by email at richard.robbins@plattsburgh.edu.

Great textbook!

At last: a textbook which confronts the cultural power of capitalism. Robbins looks at how capitalism shapes cultures and how it has evolved into the most powerful cultural influence on the planet. A great resource for anthropology, geography, or history. Not your run of the mill textbook, it offers forceful critiques and compelling history. An excellent book for college students.

way overpriced but worth reading

I've given this three stars simply because it would have to be astounding good to be worth $77, and it's not. It is very good however, and if the price was more like $20 of less, which would be reasonable for an oversized paperback, I would have given it 5 stars. Evidently, because it's a textbook the publisher can get away with this. However, I happened to find a used copy at a college bookstore, and felt I should get it because I have been wanting to better understand globalism, CAFTA, NAFTA, the WTO and the protests against it, the World Bank and how it both helps and interferes, the jobs that are being outsourced to Asia (btw, last time I spoke to Amazon customer service, it was with someone in India!), the seemingly endless reach and power of certain multi-national corporations, etc., and I thought this book would fit the bill. I haven't finished it yet, but it certainly does, and I've been learning a lot from reading it. Thought it definitely has a point of view, I feel it's a more balanced introductory book than the many highly opinionated books written by particular economists and think-tankers who are inevitably trying to persuade rather than educate.

Excellent Critique of the Free Market in the 21st Century

I am a high school economics teacher. This book clearly presents some of the complicated problems unregulated free market capitalism has created. I have used it as a resource in several classroom activities as a balance to the oversimplified perspective high school textbooks provide (which are themselves part of a market dominated by a few gigantic publishers who refuse to produce a product that would critique the very paradigm that they operate within).

Not enough yeast

Here's the problem with this book - too little yeast. I own a Zojirushi bread maker that's excellent. The accompanying recipes work out fine. However, for every 3-4 cups of flour, Zojirushi recommends 2 tsp of yeast. For the equivalent amount in this book, the authors recommended about 1. Every loaf turned out bad until I upped the yeast. I can't figure out what the authors were thinking.

Money well spent

I don't care for the texture of bread baked in bread machines, therefore I use all recipes on dough cycle only. Have tried quite a few and have not had a bad one yet, with the exception of the breadsticks; but I'll give them another try too.

Baked the buttermilk bread yesterday, excellent !

Definitely the Biggest!

New to bread machine baking, I wanted a BIG book of tested recipes. This is it. There are lots of recipes for the bread machine, both for total machine baking and oven baking. The one reason I cannot give it 5 stars is the way the recipe pages are set up.
The type is in a nice blue and hard to read orange. The type used to list the ingredients is small and every other line is in orange. I find it difficult to read as the orange seems to fade out alongside the deep blue. Maybe I need to update my glasses.
One other item I would like to have seen is an ingredient substitution guide somewhere in the Tips Section.
There are some really good features, however. The book opens out flat for easy reference to the recipe while preparing. The index cross references recipes by ingredients which I found very useful. There are some ideas for how to use the bread in sandwiches and with soups; they look yummy and worth trying.
Overall, I like the book. All the recipes I tried have come out great. I just wish the book was easier to read, but that won't keep me from using it.

After you understand how the test will go and what it incorporates this is an excellent book to tackle. I'm saying to burn through this book in a week or two for a good summary study guide. Every section it has gives you practice questions. For example, quantitative reasoning has like 14 sections. Each section focuses on something different. One may focus on decimals and fractions, and others can focus on geometry. great book

Some incorrect questions and answers

This is a review on behalf of my wife, who, despite my best efforts, now hates math more than she did before. She purchased it from Barnes & Noble, but I just had to review it, and I figured this would reach more people.

First of all, I love math, and, at least as far as GRE-level math goes, I'm quite good at it.

While the majority of the questions and answers were fine, some of the math problems were set up incorrectly; I could tell that they were aiming for a particular answer, which was given in the back; but I checked and double checked my work, and the question definitely does not work with for the answer they give.

There were also several questions that had just plain wrong answers, or the correct answer was in the wrong place in the list.

Some of the explanations are also confusing; they don't clearly convey concepts for problem-solving, but simply ask the student to keep trying different numbers until something works.

Finally, for some reason, they put the section with the easiest math (fractions and percentages) at the very end. This makes no sense; If you start easy, and gradually increase the difficulty level, rather than starting with the most difficult questions, students won't get as frustrated.

I know it's hard to set up all your questions and answers correctly, but it shouldn't cost too much to have a few nerds such as myself go through all of them before publishing a book like this.

A must-have for studying

Great book! Lot's of drills to practice on, it should keep a reader busy for a long time.

Pros:
-Plenty of drills of on average 12-14 questions each
-Drills categorized by question type e.g. Text Completion, Exponents and Square Roots so you can focus on your problem areas
-One of the only big question books out there

Cons:
-Errors in the book. Not a lot, but enough to slightly annoy you e.g. wrong answers
-Drills categorized by question type, but no mixed drills with all question types like the actual GRE
-Not enough Verbal drills, but plenty of Quantitative drills
