Gives a good general review of ortho

Gives a good general review of ortho. If you are new to ortho or looking for a very general overview this is a pretty good one. Easy to read and usually pretty well edited. The peds section is a little lacking. While it does go over the basics of treatment it really doesn't go into surgical techniques, exposures or other surgical points.

As far as I can tell, so far, after using the book for a few days, the stuff that is rare is not necessarily in this book...One can find the rare stuff on Google, etc. The book has shown itself to be well-worth the small cost.

Since I couldn't find a list of songs I'd thought I'd take a pic of the back to show. Great collection! the size of the book is smaller than I expected - having countless books with sheet music - this book is more the size of a fiction novel. Songs are laid out nicely and there is a great selection of songs in common guitar keys. My biggest complaint is that most hymns are in horrible keys for bands from their original keys. These seem to make everything easier.

Well Thought Out Formatting with a Great Collection of Hymns

Wonderful format with a great collection of classic hymns. For each song, the book shows the fingering for the chords used in that song, provides music notes for the melody for the first portion of the song for those that may need a memory refresher, and, of course, the words of the song with the chords written above. The full songs are included with the chords continuing to be written above the words so that you don't have to keep referring back to previous chords while reading the next verse.

Highly recommended!

Nicole Mones has mined the endless riches of China once again in The Last Chinese Chef. This time she hits the trifecta: the personal stories of Sam and Maggie, the history and lore of Chinese cuisine, and an inside look at cultural dislocation. Maggie McElroy is a widowed American food writer who is suddenly confronted with a paternity claim against her late husband's estate--by a Chinese family. Her editor offers her another reason to go to Beijing: write an article about a rising young Chinese-American-Jewish chef, Sam Liang. Having sold the home she had with her late husband Matt and reduced her possessions to only the barest necessities, with her life feeling as though it is contracting around her, Maggie embraces the oppportunity to sort out her feelings about Matt's supposed infidelity and do some work at the same time.

She and Sam hit it off right away, even though he is involved in a very important competition for a place on the Chinese national cooking team for the 2008 Olympics. They travel together to the south of China where she meets her husband's possible daughter--with Sam standing by to act as translator--and where Maggie meets much of Sam's family. He has been welcomed back with open arms, even though he occasionally feels that he has one foot in China and one in Ohio. Exquisite

There are certain times where I feel a certain condescension when I read foreigners trying to read meanings and poetry into what I feel is my domain as a person of Chinese ancestry. This isn't one of those times. In fact I feel humbled and delighted by the lessons that Nicole Mones was able to impart upon me.

It is rare that I get up from a book about China so totally enthralled and educated from a tome written by a yang ren, a foreigner. This book is the second book that has made me feel this way in the last few years. The first was Oracle Bones: A Journey Between China's Past and Present by Peter Hessler, it was a non-fictional observation about China and the impact that globalization has had on Chinese society. This book is a work of fiction, by virtue of that fact, it was able to draw me further into all that it had to convey: on being Chinese, on the complicated intertwining of Chinese food culture and general culture, on the meaning of guanxi, on the wonders of Chinese cuisine.

I had always felt that due to the unsavory nature of Chinese-American food as it is, that the true nature of Chinese cuisine has never been fully unleashed on the American palate. I have stewed on the fact that the French and Italian cuisines rank so much higher on the sophistication scale of the American gastronome versus the lowly Chinese cuisine. I felt it but I was unable to express it adequately. Nicole Mones has done this and more with this story. Her descriptions of the dishes, her attention to the details of the preparation, her insistence on relaying the philosophical nature of food, on presentation, on the small details and gestures so very important in China, on the little puns and literary allusions of Chinese food had opened my eyes and sent me headlong into a frenzy to rediscover my heritage through my ample stomach. Thankfully, she was good enough to have included an afterward full of resources for research so that I can research these ideas on my own.

To top it all off, she was able to wrap all of the scholarly work in a very touching and suspenseful story. After all, guanxi is all about people. The characters in this book are not necessarily completely developed, except maybe for Sam and Maggie but the other characters are developed enough to elicit emotional responses, I cared about what happened to these characters. The relationships drawn in the story are very Chinese and yet also very western, the ending had a nice and tangy sweetness to it which made me smile.

I really liked this book, it combined a lot of my own personal loves: my ancestry, food, methods of writing, and China itself to pull me in and stay there until the end. It was informative with out being didactic, sentimental without being maudlin, philosophical without being humorless, and dramatic without dropping into melodrama.

I guess you can say that I endorse this book highly.

The reader is immersed in the lives of those Maggie meets, in the essences of Chinese culture and familial bonds, and in the meaning of food and the culinary arts there. Often whilst reading, one can almost breathe in tempting aromas of dishes being prepared in bustling Chinese kitchens. But although succulent meals can be vicariously savored regularly in THE LAST CHINESE CHEF, and food is arguably at the heart of the novel, Mones doesn't scrimp on plot or on presenting believable and very different human characters, all of whom share one bounty: every person is basically decent and kind (not a ready characteristic of much current literature). No character leaves a dastardly or incorrigible impression when all is said and done. Indeed, the reader is left with a halcyon -- though perhaps an overly optimistic -- feeling that everything works for good, even if fate isn't immediately favorable.

Four and a half stars for a luscious feast of a book that radiates a love for China, its people, and its delectable cooking traditions.

Can't stop talking about this book...

This book combines everything worthy in this world, good food, tender love and the warmth of family and place that touch your heart. Anyone who's "in love" with China would know the crazy feeling that enfolds you and everything becomes surreal and every sense is heightened.

This book captures that feeling and more...the characters are so real and believable that the moment the characters finally come together, it's something you've been rooting for all along. You want him to win, you want her to heal her heart...you want them together. When she thinks of staying in China forever, you tell her, yes, go on!!!

You read the culinary history excepts of Liang Wei with just as much intensity and you feel yourself drawn into a world that you wish you knew or as Sam feels, needs to be connected to...to be whole. The conversations he has with his uncles are some of the liveliest parts of the book....family ties you wish you had following you around the kitchen.

You don't need to love Chinese food or be a culinary history buff, this book is that good. But I guarantee you'll become one afterwards. You'll want another book to continue because the stories are so rich and there's still so much more we want to experience and *taste*!!! Did I mention all the luscious food, you'll never look at wonton soup the same way again...

Another great collection from Kevin Barry.

This is a thirteen story collection from Kevin Barry whose previous published works include his Rooney Award winning collection, "There Are Little Kingdoms", and his excellent novel, "The City of Bohane". I have read and reviewed both of these previous publications and they drove me to state that I will read anything Kevin Barry has published. "Dark Lies the Island" has not diminished my enthusiasm for his work.

Most of the stories in this collection are from the viewpoint of individuals. These individuals are all deeply involved in the emotions of the situations described. From the hotel owner in Killary Harbour, through the real ale enthusiast on a beer trip to Llandudno, to the alcoholic doctor on his rounds in Ireland, Kevin Barry brings the reader into his characters heads and shares the thoughts of these characters in a smooth and deeply sensitive way.

Barry is obviously a marvellous observer of human behaviour and keen listener to spoken language. All his stories use the language of the characters in a fashion that brings the stories to life and that adds credibility to the tales and authenticity to the voices of the narrators.

The range of story topics is wide and includes the activities of a drug dealer on the run from crooks, a pair of little old ladies touring the Sligo area, the actions of a girl with a tendency to self-harm, and the thoughts of a well-to-do father who has trouble liking his teenage daughter's boyfriend. While all the stories are about things that happen, I won't say ordinary things as some of them are quite extreme, they are often presented from a viewpoint that the reader may not be accustomed and many of them will give the reader pause for thought regarding people they may have dismissed out of hand in the past. As I mentioned in my review of his earlier collection, Barry must have an amazing ability to empathise with people from every walk of life.

This book reinforces my opinion that I have found another author whose work I will buy as soon as it is published and I will have no fear of disappointment.

Strong stories about Irish adrift

This second collection, published by London's Jonathan Cape in early 2012 after his first novel "City of Bohane" garnered praise, offers thirteen stories dispersed across divergent terrain. "Across the Rooftops" hints at tenderness even as "the man who introduced Detroit techno to the savages of Cork city" fumbles his callow youth away in one last attempt at seduction. As with "Wifey Redux," the narrators find themselves painfully self-aware. They despise their own lurches between inadequacy and savagery as they grapple with women, lust, and fear.

"Wifey" finds the suburbanized narrator avenging himself and his wife of seventeen years, Saoirse, on the smug suitor of his nubile daughter, Ellie. The narrator will end being arrested, face ground into the bonnet of his Volvo, after pursuing sneering tracksuited Aodhan McAdam into a showdown at a big-box store on the Naas Road, Dublin. Barry channels the self-parodic tale of how this mock-hero came to such a sorry end, and barbecued salmon in vac-packs will be the least of the man's worries, after he fails to adapt to allow a bold live-in swain into his own granite-topped kitchen, with garden patio and big-screen domain overlooking Dun Laoghaire.

One of his best tales, "The Fjord of Killary," unfolds in a West of Ireland village as a flood engulfs a jerrybuilt pub-disco which must distract its revelers. It's as if the Titanic drifted from Belfast into a dream world where surreally it transforms into a tilted symbol of Irish stolidity and ingenious, heedless defiance. Barry surrounds the narrator with copulating, jabbering Belorussian staff, clichéd locals out of Flann O'Brien, and weather which forces the teller to adapt, learn patience, and to wait storms out.

"A Cruelty" updates Joyce's "An Encounter" into a disturbing older man who bullies a fragile boy waiting in Boyle for a Sligo-Dublin train. The offhand nature of the violence and the threat of more, in such a daytime, mundane setting, jabs the power of its spare, matter-of-fact relation of sudden cruelty. One wonders if the frightened boy will leave, as many in Barry's stories do, for another destination. "Beer Trip to Llandudno" follows an ale club's bibulous band along a formidable pub crawl for real brews, and the North Wales setting allows the members to confide in their abandonment or abandoning Ireland, and when they "came over" to Northern England, to start again. Their earnest efforts to drink away their pain highlight the woes they seek to confront and forget as they pass from pub to pub.

More unraveling of family ties comes via "Ernestine and Kit." Their Sligo itinerary finds this middle-aged pair baby-napping from an Asda checkout line, as again cruelty is unleashed in ordinary settings, while those around them pay attention to video games, barbecues and wine. "The Mainland Campaign" as its title foreshadows takes us back to England, but the insecurity of the young goth charged with setting the bomb in the Camden Town tube station persists. "Ireland is magical," he tells his a German woman he courts. "England is ironical." But, he as many in London, cannot fit in. Meanwhile, the Tipperary teen transplant seethes: "If they were the mainland, we were what?"

Similar discontent lingers in "Wistful England," as another Irish transplant drinks and walks and broods. "Doctor Sot" conveys the venture of an Irish doctor on an outreach program to treat the "sex diseases" of New Age travelers from Devon holed up one atop Slieve Bo, where he comforts a psychotic woman. "The Girls and the Dogs" skirts similar territory, winding up in a chemical toilet in a trailer near Gort. Nobody in Barry's stories seems balanced, and this tilt towards the off-kilter characterizes his sympathy.

Ukrainians with tire irons scare the Co. Roscommon inhabitants living in a "White Hitachi" by the side of the road, and more highway predicaments by this stage do show Barry in a rut he needs to get out of. The title story finds Sara, a fresh graduate and a "cutter," preparing as she looks over Clew Bay in Co. Mayo to do more of the same to herself. UK Memories is the channel of songs she hears from the 1940s on her laptop, as texts come in from Flagstaff and Bremen, and calls from Granada. Sara hears John Lennon sing "For No One" and thinks of him settling near there on Dorinish Island with Yoko as he'd once planned; Sara muses about her mother who'd left with a Dublin broker who bought a failing vineyard in France. Her ties span the world, but she sits with her soundcloud and messages, to decide what to do with her set of knives.

The final story, "Berlin Arkonaplatz--My Lesbian Summer," finds the teller in gentrifying but very artsy Berlin. Patrick is told by his Sapphic Slavic companion Silvija that "I was the culmination of Irish literature." His own displacement in Germany leads the pair to hate the arrival of Americans as the harbinger of the end of any trend, and they rob flats for passports to sell to Ukrainians, while Vietnamese, Croat, and Tasmanian denizens flit about the studios. He fails to write his stories down. But someone does, as the collection closes, leaving him and his unsettled other characters forlorn and adrift. Like his first collection, 2007's "There Are Little Kingdoms" (see my review), these show promise and reward attention.

Strong Stuff. Six point two percent to volume.

"Fjord of Killary," the first short story by Kevin Barry to reach these shores, showed up in the February 1, 2010, issue of the New Yorker. It sent me looking for "There Are Little Kingdoms," his 2007 collection of stories published in Ireland but not here. "Dark Lies the Island", Barry's second collection of stories, includes the 2010 New Yorker story and several other pungent treats including "Beer Trip to Llandudo" which won a 2012 London Sunday Times Short Story contest notable for both the honor bestowed and the prize (nearly $50,000).

There are thirteen stories in the new collection. The "Fjord of Killary" finds the patrons of the Water's Edge Hotel -- mostly "tough, knarly, west of Ireland" hill country people - holed up for the duration of a "particularly violent" storm, "an hysterical downpour, with great sheets of water streaming down from Mweelrea" which soon enough flooded the lower floors of the Hotel. Free drinks and the excitement generated by their predicament sustain the group while they await the outcome.

The prize story, "Beer Trip to Llandudo" is a gem, a story on a par with "Breakfast Wine" -- the pick of "Lttle Kingdoms." There, unless a third alcoholic is found to complement the two regular denizens of The North Star pub, it will be put on the block, and therein lies the tale. In "Llandudo", Barry presents us with the six members of the Real Ale Club, Lime Street, Aigburth, Liverpool on an ale tasting excursion to the old seaside resort town of Llandudo, Wales, at the height of summer. Here, to give you some idea of the clubs exploits, are the names of the ales consumed along their way that day: "Marston's Old Familiar" (case), "Phoenix Tram Driver" (on cask), "Bellhaven Bombardier" (one round), "Cornish Lightning" (a round), "Lancaster Bomber" (from the pump), St. Austell Tributes" (a round), "Whitstable Silver Star" (6.2 percent to volume), "Miner's Slattern" (on cask) and "Cumberland Pedigrees" (3.4 percent). As Big John put it at the end of the day, "We've supped some quality ale."

The understated badinage among the members is nothing short of masterful, particularly considering the rate at which they took on ale.
"Real Ale Club would not have marked Mo for a romancer."
" `The quiet ones you watch," said Tom N. `Maurice?' "
" `Mo? With a piece?' whispered Everett Bell"

Many of the other stories, including the title story "Dark Lies the Island," feel more sinister. Roddy Doyle, who provides a cover blurb, achieved a similar sense of lurking evil in his 1996 novel "The Woman Who Ran into Doors." "White Hitachi" and "Doctor Sot" deal with forlorn lives as does Barry in his just published story "Ox Mountain Death Song" (in the October 29, 2012 New Yorker). The Irish Times describes the darker stories in the new collection as "horrifically realistic narratives."

About the Author
Paul Gilreath is an award-winning composer who creates original music in a variety of styles for video games, film, television, trailers, and broadcast advertising. Gilreath has written theme, underscore and broadcast advertising music for a wide range of clients that include NBC, CBS, Cartoon Network, ESPN, American Airlines and many others. His music has been used multiple times for the Olympic Games broadcasts on NBC and several PGA tournaments on NBC. He scored the feature film No Retreat No Surrender starring Jean Claude Van Damme, Knights of the City starring Curtis Mayfield, and Making Contact directed by Roland Emmerich (Independence Day).

Good Starting Point for Two Groups of Musicians

Those already familiar with traditional orchestration or jazz arranging looking to move into the electronic realm can skim the early chapters on instrumentation and get right to the meat of technical setup, the specifics of sample libraries, scoring techniques and formulating a workflow for the task at hand.

Musicians coming from an electronic music background looking to broaden their instrumental pallet to include digital orchestration will find Galreath’s book to be one of a small handful of worthwhile texts on the subject. As useful as it is however, I’d strongly recommend (and I think Galreath would agree) first or concurrently studying a traditional orchestration text (i.e. Adler, Kennan, Forsyth, Piston) as well as some of the better-known jazz and commercial arranging texts (i.e. Sebesky, Mancini, Israels, Corzine, Pease and Pulig (Berklee), Grove ).

The challenge of many orchestration books is twofold: To separate ‘instrumentation’ – the largely static body of technical information about instrument ranges and common practice playing techniques from ‘orchestration in the whole’: Ensemble scoring techniques, musical arrangement and transcription considerations, instrumental combinations, color and timbre blending, as well as practical performance considerations.

Galreath’s book attempts to cover both bases and I have to say I wish he’d spent less time on instrumentation – if only to allow for even more depth in the scoring techniques, libraries, workflow and other areas that really set this book apart.

His examples lean toward ‘traditional’ orchestral techniques: clear demarcation of theme and accompaniment, divisi parts, arched dynamics. That’s musically where I’m coming from as well and I found his craft solid and well-evident – worth devoting time to study.

I have to say I still feel the one ‘indispensable’ book on MIDI orchestration has yet to be written but Galreath’s can certainly vie for top honors.
I also own the previous edition; the changes I can detect are mostly refinements and technical updating rather than any fundamental reorganization.

This book serves as a very helpful reference book for anyone interested in scoring orchestra using MIDI. There are very helpful explanations of the different orchestral sections, and how the individual instruments within them are used. This information would be easily understood by anyone with basic music knowledge, and also help with orchestral scoring in general. Next, the book explores how to achieve realistic results using MIDI. Although technology is progressing very fast, this book is still very relevant. In fact, like most studio equipment, getting good results with less resources makes you better at using professional tools. Having the knowledge in this book will only make you better at understanding the powerful plugins available today, such as the ones being created by EastWest.

An OK Book For Someone Just Starting Out

I already had 15 years using MIDI for orchestration and thought this book would have some useful tips, but it seems like I already knew most of what is in here from other sources and my own experience. This book would be useful for someone just starting out. Other than that, it's just sort of OK. A lot of the material is starting to become outdated, but it's still useful for people who know nothing at all about this craft. Unfortunately the web site for this book and author are not kept up to date, so the examples in the book can not be accessed. I have found a lot more useful information at the VI-Control forum on the internet.

Cute! Funny! And Sweet!

My readers are two 2-1/2-yer-old girls. They like! And so does mom.

I never thought I'd think a picture book about a fly would be cute, but this fly IS cute! Big eyes and adorable expressions. I like reading a book about bugs that doesn't depict them as icky.

And I never thought a picture book about a fly and Frankenstein situation would be sweet...but it IS! All of the books in this series have a wonderful undercurrent of friendship. The boy and his fly are total buds. A nice departure from the usual friendship between a boy and his dog.

We have two in the series, and I think we will get Fly Guy #8: Fly Guy Meets Fly Girl! next.

Sweet and funny

As pretty much always, Fly Guy doesn't disappoint here. Arnold's pictures are witty, bold and reward looking closely; the text is pretty much perfect for the very early reader; the plot and resolution are sweet and funny and representative of the enduring bond between a boy and his pet fly. I'll kind of miss these when my youngest gets too old for them.
