Great introduction to the field
By Laurel Newman
This book provides a thorough introduction to the field of personality psychology as it currently exists. The focus is more on contemporary research as opposed to classic theories. I have used it in my personality psych class for the past 5 years and students like it a lot. It has a lot of information but is easy to read and understand.

Daphne, the most beautiful of the Six Sisters, picks her own husband
By Lawrance Bernabo
It seems that 18-year-old Daphne, the fourth daughter of the Reverend Charles Armitage, is the most beautiful of "The Six Sisters" that Marion Chesney has been writing about in these romance novels of Regency England, so of course that means trouble. No one is more aware of Daphne's dazzling beauty than Daphne herself, who is also painfully aware of her father's track record when it comes to finding wealthy noblemen to marry his daughters. As we all know, the vicar likes to hunt, and he requires the financial support of his three sons-in-law to do so. But Daphne has other ideas, namely to marry Cyril Archer. At face value (and I do mean at face value), they are a perfect match, because he is as vain and empty-headed as Daphne herself. Once married, she can continue to present the pretty picture of herself to the world without having to reveal there is an empty shell of a woman behind the beautiful face.

However, while Daphne is in London with Lady Godolphin the malaprop-prone cousin whose home all of the Armitage girls seem to end up with when they visit London town, Reverend Armitage's affairs suffer a catastrophic misfortune. You see, a jealous bishop is after the vicar's hunting pack, and when Mr. Simon Garfield comes to the rescue, and proves himself to be as rich as he is noble, Reverend Armitage offers up Daphne as a bride. This means daughter number four is going to have to drop the facade and demand the right to find her own husband (like that is going to happen). Meanwhile, Annabelle, the second oldest sister, is having troubles with her own marriage because the new baby in the house tends to scream all of the time. Annabelle might be more maternal if the boy was actually her own, but that, of course, is part of the problem.

"Daphne" would not be a Chesney romance if the title character was not put into a compromising position, and we have one of those as well in this book. But by now Chesney's readers fully understand and appreciate her formula as one forced marriage after another leads to true love and romance. There are plenty of period touches for those who pay attention to such details, and while the characters are all familiar types from such tales, Chesney clearly takes great pleasure in putting them through their paces. Besides, all of the twists and turns in the plot add to the general sense of merriment, as does her sense of humor. But in the end love will prevail, Mr. Archer will be forced to flee the field, and the vicar will get to keep his hunt. Next up is "Diana the Huntress," which should give you plenty of indications as to what sort of handful she will prove to be and if you have gotten two-thirds of the way through the series there is no reason to stop now.

The six sister
By A Customer
I've bought the six sisters' series in the wrong order with Daphne being the last one in the series that I got. The book is good and typical Marion Chesney. Daphne, who knows she is a beauty, finds another beauty in the handsome Cyril Archer, but in typical Marion Chesney style, there is more to meet the eye. The Vicar is indebeted to a Mr. Simon Garfield, who is able to read Daphne like a book. He knows she knows she's a beauty and putting up a front because it's easier that way. The way Marion Chesney gets these two finally together is delightful.
This is not the best of the six sisters' series, that's why I gave only four stars. I was somewhat handicapped since I had the read all the other in the series before I read Daphne. I would recommend you read the series in the correct order, but even if you don't, this book is still wonderful to read.

another hilarious romp!
By Periphery
I'm not sure if the authors British or not but these books are so darn clever, witty & intelligently written! I'm just in love with the whole series and I am so happy that there are more MC Beaton books out so that I can read a different series is well. I hate to give any spoilers but I'll just say that if you want to good laugh and a Merry romp through a regency romance, then this is your series!

Oscar Micheaux: The Great and Only: The Life of America's First Black Filmmaker, by Patrick McGilligan

Oscar Micheaux was the Jackie Robinson of film, the black D. W. Griffith: a bigger-than-life American folk hero whose important life story is nearly forgotten today. Now, in a feat of historical investigation and vivid storytelling, one of our greatest film biographers takes on one of the most talented and complex figures in the history of American entertainment.

The son of freed slaves, Micheaux grew up in Metropolis, Illinois, then roamed America as a Pullman porter before making his first mark as a homesteader in South Dakota. Disaster and defeat there led him to forge a career publishing a successful series of autobiographical novels. Ever the entrepreneur, when Hollywood failed to bid high enough for film rights to his stories, he answered by forming his own film production company. Going on to produce or direct twenty-two silent and fifteen sound films in his lifetime, Micheaux became the king of the "race cinema" industry at a time when black-produced films had to scrounge for venues in a segregated society.

In this groundbreaking new biography, award-winning film historian Patrick McGilligan offers a vivid and fascinating portrait of this little-known pioneer. Part visionary, part raffish Barnum-like showman, Micheaux was both a maverick filmmaker and an inveterate hustler who used every weapon at his disposal to break the color barrier and thrive in a profession he helped to invent. He made a fortune and lost it again, and launched repeated con games that were followed by public arrests and bankruptcies. He eagerly took credit for the work of others—including his unsung-heroine wife. In his desperate later years, he even sunk to plagiarizing his final novel—a discovery McGilligan reveals here for the first time.

In this searching exploration, McGilligan tracks down long-lost financial records, unpublished letters, and unmarked pauper's graves, pinpointing Micheaux's birthplace, his tangled personal life, and the circumstances of his tragic death. The result is an epic that bridges a fascinating period in American history, and offers lessons for anyone who would understand the role of black America in forming the culture of our time.

From Publishers Weekly
At a time when Hollywood was so white that conditions would have had to be improved one hundredfold before it could even qualify as Jim Crow, Micheaux (1884–1951) was forced to pursue his creative ambitions as an independent filmmaker in the race picture market. McGilligan, the author of several acclaimed biographies of film directors (George Cukor: A Double Life), returns again and again to the image of Micheaux as a lone wolf, churning out two or three pictures a year at his peak while barely managing to stay ahead of creditors. And it wasn't just the all-black casts that put his films outside the mainstream; the stories often ran afoul of censors and critics for their uncompromising portrayals of contemporary African-American society. McGilligan sketches a crucial portrait of his subject's life before motion pictures, including an attempt to work a South Dakota homestead and a failed marriage that would provide the impulse for much of his creative output. The story isn't always as detailed as readers might like, but that's due to the limited available historical record. McGilligan does a fine job of reaffirming Micheaux's significance beyond the appreciation of cineastes.

From Booklist
The author of George Cukor (1991) and Alfred Hitchcock (2003) here limns a far less renowned but equally compelling figure: Oscar Micheaux, foremost director of race films, featuring all-black casts and aimed at black audiences during the era of segregation. After stints as a Pullman porter and homestead farmer, Micheaux, the son of freed slaves, penned autobiographical novels. When Hollywood wouldn't buy his stories, he took up filmmaking in 1919. The quality of his efforts was restricted by financial constraints and the limitations of his talents (McGilligan implies he was more skilled at marketing movies than at making them), yet they shed valuable light on the harsh realities of African American life. Despite thorough research, gaps remain in McGilligan's account. But then, two-thirds of Micheaux's 40-plus films are lost, and the rest survive only as truncated by censorship. Micheaux's career began to fizzle, along with race films, in the late 1930s, and he died in obscurity in 1951. Rediscovered decades later, he is now considered, as McGilligan puts it, the Jackie Robinson of American film. Flagg, Gordon

A great book about a great man
By Martin J. Keenan
McGilligen's "deep background" research pays off as his prose brings life to the mysterious life of Oscar Micheaux. McGilligen's knowledge of film history and movie directors brings historical context and makes Micheaux's accomplishments seem all the more amazing. Paced like a novel, the book is sprinkled liberally with Micheaux's own words, and really seems to capture the man. I certainly hope this book introduces Micheaux to a new generation of readers.

McGilligan does it again!
By BMT
Having successfully chronicled such outsiders behind the camera as Cukor and Lang, celebs with secrets like Eastwood and Nicholson, and iconic geniuses like Hitchcock, I must say that I was surprised when I picked up this latest from the master film historian becuase I knew absolutetly nothing about the book's subject, a deficiency I am afraid that I share with the vast majority of American film-goers.
Now thanks to McGilligan's mastery I a aware of the "great and only" Oscar Micheaux who seems to have gotten the short shrift of American History in much the same manner as Crispus Attucks and Danile Hale Williams.
McGilligan charts the almost unchartable as this self-made man moves from porter to homesteader to author to film-maker, mixing the economics and art of the early film industry in an effort to supply entertainment and Art to an audience neglected by the major studios.
Filled with documentation, numerous name walk-ons, and insightful criticisms one is left with only one question after reading this book : how could Oscar Micheaux have been so neglected by both the public eye and history? ... and the fact that that question is raised is all to the credit of McGilligan's work.
BRAVO Patrick McGilligan - you've done it again!

This book is intended as an introduction to programming in C++ for the programmer or student already familiar with Fortran. It uses an evolutionary teaching process, with Fortran as a starting point and C++ as a destination. The book is written to allow the reader to stop and use the language facilities at various points in the text.

This book will get the Fortran programmer up and running in C++ in the shortest possible time. It uses a teaching-by-equivalency method that allows the Fortran programmer the ability to immediately convert existing code over to C++. It emphasizes working code. A program particularly illustrative of the chapter*s themes is analyzed by dissection, which is similar to a structured walk-through of the code. Dissection explains to the reader newly encountered programming elements and idioms. Fortran is the major teaching language for beginning engineering students. It was designed by John Backus at IBM in the 1950s, and many efficient and fast compilers exist for it. Fortran is tailored to numerical scientific programming, and is the leading language for that use. For nonnumerical domains, Fortran lacks key features that limit its use in the software community, where C and C++ are the dominant languages.

C++, invented at Bell Labs by Bjarne Stroustrup in the mid-1980s, is a powerful modern successor language to C. C++ adds to C the concept of class, a mechanism for providing user-defined types also called abstract data types. It supports object-oriented programming by these means and by providing inheritance and run-time type binding. C++ is increasingly the choice of scientists and engineers in developing scientific software. This book is intended for use in a first course in programming in C++. The reader is expected to know Fortran or have enough programming experience to follow this tutorial. It can be used as a supplementary text in an advanced programming, data structures, software methodology, comparative language, or other course in which the instructor wants C++ to be the language of choice. Each chapter presents a number of carefully explained programs.

All the major pieces of code were tested. A consistent and proper coding style is adopted from the beginning and is one chosen by professionals in the C++ community. The code is available at the Addison Wesley Longman Web site (www.aw.com).

For the Fortran programmer who wants C experience, this book could be used in conjunction with A Book on C, Third Edition by Al Kelley and Ira Pohl (Addison-Wesley, 1995). As a package, the two books offer an integrated treatment of the C and C++ programming languages and their use that is unavailable elsewhere. This book incorporates:

An Evolutionary Approach. The Fortran programmer is introduced to equivalent concepts in the C++ programming language. By learning how individual elements of a Fortran program translate into C++, the Fortran programmer can immediately gain a facility with C++. Chapter 1, "An Overview of C++ and Object-Oriented Programming," provides an introduction to C++*s use as an object-oriented programming language. Chapter 2, "Native Types and Statements," shows the parallels between programming in Fortran and C++ with regard to data types, expressions, and simple statements. Chapter 3, "Functions, Pointers, and Arrays," continues with similarities between functions and complex data types. The middle chapters show how to use classes, which are the basis for abstract data types and object-oriented programming (OOP). The later chapters give advanced details of the use of inheritance, templates, and exceptions. At any point in the text the programmer can stop and use the new material.

Teaching by Example. The book is a tutorial that stresses examples of working code. Right from the start the student is introduced to full working programs. An interactive environment is assumed. Exercises are integrated with the examples to encourage experimentation. Excessive detail is avoided in explaining the larger elements of writing working code. Each chapter has several important example programs. Major elements of these programs are explained by dissection.

Data Structures in C++. The text emphasizes many of the standard data structures from computer science. Stacks, safe arrays, dynamically allocated multidimensional arrays, lists, trees, and strings are all implemented. Exercises extend the student*s understanding of how to implement and use these structures. Implementation is consistent with an abstract data type approach to software.

Object-Oriented Programming. The reader is led gradually to the object-oriented style. Chapter 1, "An Overview of C++ and Object-Oriented Programming," discusses how the Fortran programmer can benefit in important ways from a switch to C++ and object-oriented programming. Object-oriented concepts are defined, and the way in which these concepts are supported by C++ is introduced. Chapter 4, "Classes," introduces classes, which are the basic mechanism for producing modular programs and implementing abstract data types. Class variables are the objects being manipulated. Chapter 9, "Inheritance," develops inheritance and virtual functions, two key elements in this paradigm. Chapter 11, "OOP Using C++," discusses OOP and the Platonic programming philosophy. This book develops in the programmer an appreciation of this point of view.

Fortran Equivalence. Where appropriate, C++ code is given with equivalent FORTRAN 77 code. This gives the experienced Fortran programmer immediate access to idiomatic C++ code. FORTRAN 77 has been augmented by other versions of Fortran, the primary one being Fortran 90. Fortran 90 has many additional features, such as modules, recursion, a free-form style, pointers and structured data, and better flow of control statements.

ANSI C++ Language and iostream.h. For an existing, widely used language, C++ continues to change at a rapid pace. This book is based on the most recent standard: the ANSI C++ Committee language documents. A succinct informal language reference is provided in Appendix D, "Language Guide." Use of the iostream.h library is featured in Appendix E, "Input/Output," and STL is featured in Appendix F, "STL and String Libraries."

Standard Template Library (STL). STL is explained and used in Chapter 8, "Templates, Generic Programming, and STL," and in Appendix F, "STL and String Libraries." Many of the data structure examples foreshadow its explanation and use. There is a strong emphasis on the template mechanism required for STL and the iterator idiom that STL exploits. The numerical examples stressed are important to scientific computation.

Industry- and Course-Tested. This book is the basis of many on-site professional training courses given by the author, who has used its contents to train professionals and students in various forums since 1986. The various changes are course-tested, and reflect the author*s considerable teaching and consulting experience.

Exercises. The exercises test and often advance the student*s knowledge of the language. Many are intended to be done interactively while reading the text, encouraging self-paced instruction. Others test standard scientific concepts, such as the use of vectors, pseudorandom computations, numerical methods for evaluating integrals, conversion of units, and the use of complex numbers.

Engineering and Scientific Computations. Scientific and engineering computations are featured throughout. Important scientific types such as complex numbers, vectors, and polynomials are implemented. Modern simulation technique is featured through an ecological simulation that is implemented using object-oriented techniques. Numerical methods such as root finding and integration are featured.

Web site. The examples both within the book and at Addison-Wesley*s Web site are intended to exhibit good programming style. The Addison-Wesley Web site for this book contains the programs in the book as well as adjunct programs that illustrate points made in the book or flesh out short pieces of programs. The programs available at the Web site are introduced by their .cpp or .h names and can be obtained by referencing: http://www.aw.com/cseng/pohl/c++4f/ch_num/program_name.cpp

My special thanks go to my wife, Debra Dolsberry, who encouraged me throughout this project. She acted as book designer and technical editor for this edition. She developed appropriate formats and style sheets in FrameMaker 5.0 and guided the transition process from my other books on C++. She also implemented and tested all major pieces of code.

This book was developed with the support of my editor, J. Carter Shanklin, and editorial assistant, Angela Buenning.

Doesn't live up to its title
By avoraciousreader
First, let me say that this does seem to be a perfectly respectable C++ book.
One could do worse, and it does not seem that knowing Fortran is a prerequisite.
It's the "... For Fortran Programmers" part that is disappointing. I'm a member of the ostensible target demographic -- someone who has programmed for decades off and on in Fortran and is looking to learn the C (/ C++) language -- and this book sounded like exactly what I was looking for. Unfortunately, it did not live up to this expectation. The Fortran related material occupies only the first 20% of the book (plus a brief appendix), essentially the plain-old-C chapters.
The "for Fortran programmers" content is mostly concerned with those areas where there are direct equivalences between the two languages that can be summarized neatly in tables (e.g. Fortran's "double precision" is the same as C's "double"). This kind of info is useful, but an experienced Fortran programmer will easily pick it up anyway. When it comes to more complicated issues such as control structures (IF, etc.), the emphasis seems to be to present Fortran equivalents of C structures, rather than the reverse. I guess this could be seen as using the presumed Fortran background to explicate a C language description, but I'd think most Fortran programmers learning C will be thinking the reverse, "I know how to do in Fortran, how do I achieve the same thing in C?" Compounding this, the assumption seems to be that the Fortran programmed in is Fortran 90, which is far from universally adopted (especially with the immense amount of legacy code in use).
Of course, a lot of the C++ language simply has no direct equivalent in Fortran. But if this were really written from the start for Fortran programmers there should be specific discussion showing how to do things that a Fortran programmer finds clumsy (such as matrix manipulation) more smoothly with the "++" part of C++, and the book should use examples drawn from scientific programming (which has been the primary domain of Fortran programmers).
I am not saying this book should be a simple translation manual, but it should start with what the Fortran programmer already knows and build from there, and deal with problems that the Fortran programmer is typically interested in.
In summary, this is a decent C++ book, but the Fortran content seems to be a clumsy afterthought, grafted on for marketing reasons.

A disappointing book
By Brian Bowman
This is the only text I know of that tries to take the Fortran programmer directly into C++. This attempt was a poor effort at best. Ira's other book C++ for C Programmers was highly recommended to me to learn C++. Being a Fortran programmer and not a C programmer, I thought Ira would have made this book at a comparable level. Instead he used the C++ for C Programmers text with a few changes for Fortran syntax. This shows a minimal effort on Ira's part, very disappointing! The reader of this book needs a good background in C to understand it. And if your C background is good, get the C++ for C Programmers book. C++ for Fortran Programmers should be rewritten for programmers with only a Fortran background as the title indicates. Then, I believe this text could fill a unique and important gap in the literature. A second issue I have with this text is Ira's writing style. He writes at a high level thus you need to be able to read at that level. That's all fine, but then he needs to be a competent writer of the English language. Ira's technical writing fails miserably here (showing short, weak examples in no way makes up for this!). My advice for Fortran only programmers is get a short introductory book on C and then get a short (introductory?) book on C++. Your basic programming skills should easily cover anything else. Ira should have done something like this when he wrote the book.

Book does not discuss some elementary Fortran statements
By John C. Price (jcprice@mho.net)
I feel the title of the book is extremely misleading. With no mention of "common", no discussion of "subroutine", or "equivalence" this book is not suitable for a Fortran programmer who wishes to learn C++ by converting statements from F. to C. Nor are the C++ concepts placed in the context of Fortran. Author could write a book on every language for C++ programmers with minimal effort - just include a few short simple programs in the other language. Don't buy if you expect to benefit from your Fortran experiance.

Dominic has created a master manual for memory
By R P Cook
This has to be the pinnacle of work for Dominic. He has distilled his ideas from numerous previous books, added excellent exercises and given you ways to actually use the tools in real life.

I have been drip-feeding my children ideas from this book and they are starting to see results in both memory and creativity by flexing the mind. Sure, not everyone wants to be a world champion but we all want better recall and grasp of the world around us.

Very well written Dominic demonstrates his sense of humour and is humble in describing his achievements stemming, by his own admission, from a poor academic start in life. If you liked "Moonwalking with Einstein" then this really gives you the toolkit to make it happen for you! Couple this learning with some of the great apps available for smart phones and you will develop a formidable memory in no time.

BY FAR THE BEST MEMORY IMPROVEMENT SYSTEM (THOUGH I SLIGHTLY PREFER DOMINIC'S "HOW TO DEVELOP A BRILLIANT MEMORY WEEK BY WEEK")
By Mr. James Smith
The "Dominic System" laid out in these pages is, for me, by far the most natural and user-friendly method of memorising or working with strings of numbers and letters because it is based upon:
1. people and actions, which are endlessly more interesting than the systems of, say, Tony Buzan or Dr Bruno Furst which are largely based upon objects;
2. an interchangeable number-letter code that couldn't be easier to pick up or refer back to as, again unlike the other much more confusing and working-against-oneself systems I am aware of it pretty much follows the order of first ten letters of the English alphabet
(for these two crucial reasons, my book MEMORY PALACE DEFINTIVE and all future ones I am working on are compatible with and expand upon Dominic's number-letter code and System. I also tout Dominic's earlier book HOW TO DEVELOP A BRILLIANT MEMORY WEEK BY WEEK as my standard text on memory improvement in my chapter on both this subject and developing fluid intelligence in the Pat Wyman-edited book AMAZING GRADES).

I slightly prefer HOW TO DEVELOP A BRILLIANT MEMORY WEEK BY WEEK over YOU CAN HAVE AN AMAZING MEMORY, which is still, for me, by far the standard in the field because it is both slightly more concisely focused (but still with sufficient examples for practice) on the various interlinked memory improvement techniques and covers a few more of them.

Austere Luminosity of Chinese Classical Furniture, by Sarah Handler

Chinese classical furniture is esteemed throughout the world for its beauty, functionalism, and influence on contemporary design aesthetics. Sarah Handler's stunningly illustrated volume traces Chinese hardwood furniture from its earliest origins in the Shang dynasty (c. 1500 to c. 1050 B.C.) to the present. She offers a fascinating and poetic view of Chinese furniture as functional sculpture, a fine art alongside the other Chinese arts of calligraphy, architecture, painting, and literature.

Handler, a widely respected scholar of Chinese furniture, uses her knowledge of Chinese social, political, and economic history to provide a backdrop for understanding the many nuances of this art form. Drawing on literary and visual evidence from excavated materials, written texts, paintings, prints, and engravings, she discusses how people lived, their notions of hierarchy, and their perceptions of space. Her descriptions of historical developments, such as the shift from mats to chairs, evoke the psychological and sociological ramifications.

The invention of a distinctive way to support and contain people and things within the household is one of China's singular contributions, says Handler. With more than three hundred exquisite illustrations, many in color, Handler's comprehensive study reveals "the magical totality of Chinese classical furniture, from its rich surfaces and shrewd proportions down to the austere soul of art that resides in the hardwood interiors." Austere Luminosity recognizes Chinese classical furniture as one of China's premier arts, unique in the furniture traditions of the world.

From Library Journal
Numerous books have illustrated Chinese furniture, but this is the first major work to reach beyond picturing collectors' trophies and place Chinese furniture in the context of the culture. The Chinese were the only civilization outside of Europe in premodern times to adopt a daily lifestyle based on chairs, tables, and other accessories rather than the mats, cushions, and trays prevalent in the rest of the world. What caused this movement up from floor level, and how was it reflected in the design and use of specific pieces of furniture? Further, how did it culminate in the creation of the magnificent rosewood furniture of the Song, Ming, and Qing dynasties? A former curator of the Museum of Classical Chinese Furniture who also taught at the University of California, Los Angeles, Handler discusses these topics and hosts of others in the clear, well-informed text. Approximately 118 color and 204 black-and-white images of single pieces of furniture and woodcuts from historic texts show comparable furniture in daily use. Handler has effectively woven the narrow subject of Chinese furniture design into the larger tapestry of Chinese life. Recommended. David McClelland, Philadelphia

Review
"Blends art history with social history to trace the evolution of Chinese hardwood furniture."--"Art and Antiques magazine

From the Inside Flap
"Sarah Handler has written a true cultural history of Chinese furniture. Her book is a highly erudite blend of art history and social history, yet with a structure as transparent and elegant as that of a fine piece of Ming-style furniture."—Klaas Ruitenbeek, Louise Hawley Stone Chair of Far Eastern Art, Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, and author of Carpentry and Building in Late Imperial China: A Study of the Fifteenth-Century Carpenter's Manual Lu Ban jing

Well researched, covering historical past of each furniture type...
By mdr
the book discuss the evolution of chair, and then studies the different type of furniture such as chairs, beds, tables, cabinets, screens, and stands. each have very good examples and explanation of its origin.
however, I have to point out the very first line of this book "china was the only nation in East Asia, indeed the only nation outside the West, to adopt the chair-level mode of living before the modern period." is incorrect. In late Shilla and Koryo period of Korea, Korea have also adopted chair for government palaces and other government offices, but decided not to use for residences (probably because of extreme cold and space, and preferred the "ondol" floor heating system).
Western scholarship still lack proper viewpoint of China, Korea, and Japan. However, this book is quite very good, and much better than her other book "Ming Furniture in Light of Chinese Architecture".
